The festival opens September 26, 2015 with a grand parade down Atlantic Avenue and closes October 4, 2015. You can stroll along the boardwalk from 18th - 29th street and find vendors under a sea of white canopies selling their wares and delicious foods. If you decide to attend, find the vendor selling the fish tacos. They are yummy in your tummy. They also sell veggie burgers, gyros, and a variety of other foods that you can expect at a festival. There are also vendors selling arts, crafts and musicians to entertain you.
What excites me about the festival is the artists who create these amazing sand sculptures. This year's Neptune Festival will host 32 international sculptors who will flex their muscles and compete for the prize. Sculptors will bring their skills from the USA, Russia, Holland, Canada, Italy, Spain, Bulgaria, Ireland and Singapore. Big money is up for grabs and big sculptures will rise on the sand. The precision that they use to make the sculptures is incredible.
It is so much fun to walk along the beach and check out these beautiful works of art. To give you a taste of what you will see here's a few pictures from prior festivals:
The first time that I saw sand sculptures was in Venice Beach, CA. I couldn't believe that such beautiful artwork could be made out of sand. I was hooked. My daughter moved to Virginia Beach years ago, so I try to attend the Neptune Festival when I can. The sand artists never disappoint. If you're willing to pay an entry fee, you can sit under this massive canopy if the weather is not cooperating and watch the artist sculpt. The fee also allows you to mingle with the artists.
Mark your calendar for the 2016 Neptune Festival. Parking can be found on Pacific Avenue without too much trouble and it allows easy access to the boardwalk. Be sure to bring a stroller for baby, hat and your sunscreen. You'll want to spend the day.
These things always amaze me! What skill! And then just knowing they won't last....not sure I'd work that hard under those circumstances, but sure admire those who look at it as "impermanent art."
ReplyDeleteHi J. It takes skill to create these works of art for sure. They're competing for a purse, so I don't the artists really care that they're not permanent. If you're willing to fly around the world to build a sand sculpture, it must be paying the bills, lol. Thanks for stopping by.
DeleteI'm amazed by the creativity and talent of those who can make sand sculptures. That last one is my fave. I'd love to attend a festival like that one. Sounds interesting.
ReplyDeleteHi Terra, that particular sculpture generated a ton of traffic. I love this festival. It's our final trip to the beach and a great way to end the summer. These artists are amazing. The fact that they travel around the world to compete is a sign that the purse is huge. They are truly masters of their craft.
DeleteI love sand sculptures and am always amazed at the detail. Wish I had the patience to do it! LOL my 19 month old would be tearing it apart and trying to yank the bucket out of my hands!

ReplyDeleteHi Veronica. Glad you stopped by. The sculptures are amazing. I look forward to seeing the artists create their masterpieces.
DeleteThat is truly art! It would be wonderful to go to an event like that but I settle for the sand castles we build!
