I have a Dinner Disaster. I ruined my stuffing last year at Christmas dinner. I fry my turkey, so I make my stuffing as a side dish. I purchased Seasoned Salt that I normally use, and they had changed the top on the bottle. I didn't realize they had incorporated the shaker portion of the bottle into the cap. Instead of taking the cap off and shaking the seasoning, you now have to lift the top on the cap and shake the seasoning from there. I took the cap off as I normally do, and I poured way too much seasoning into the stuffing. It was ruined. It was too late to make a store run and there was no way I could salvage the stuffing and the ingredients. Have you ever served turkey with no stuffing? Not good at a holiday meal. My family still talks about me and the fact that they couldn't pour gravy over their mashed potatoes and stuffing.

My disaster was my first Thanksgiving to cook for my entire family,mom had passed the serving spoon to me,an NO ONE told me that Turkeys had "insides" it cooked okay until my dad went to carve it an he cut into paper???He said honey didnt you put your hand up the butt an remove the"giblets"WTF is a giblet???an put my hand up its butt!!!!!! welllllllllll nooooooo,they all had a big laugh an he removed the steaming bag of "stuff" the turkey was cooked okay except for that,you know I read the directions an it didnt SAY anything about hand up the butt an pulling out stuff!!yuck,I did it the next year,an yes my dad checked before carving

ReplyDeleteMy Christmas disaster was as a young mom with 2 tiny kids I was thinking I was invincible and could have a HUGE CHristmas celebration and meal for my entire HUGE family. I decided on swiss steak, salads, vegetables,potatoes, and MANY desserts and homemade candy assortment. I wanted to do it ALL myself. I worked for days cleaning and had my house so nicely decorated. I did what I could ahead while the kids napped.
ReplyDeleteCome what may, on the day of this extended family party with almost 40 people invited, we ended up with a blizzard and everyone had to cancel. We were going to do it 2 days later but I ended up in urgent care with strep throat, along with our 4 year old. EVeryone of course canceled for the second time and we ate over 20 lbs of leftover Swiss steak for WEEKS (put in freezer). I have never made it or eaten it again SINCE!!! I learned I was not superwoman and have also learned that pushing too hard and putting yourself through too much stress during the holidays is VERY unhealthy!!!

@Jakiesmom, Thanks or stopping by. I agree, you have to have a turkey for Thanksgiving. When you're in college, there's nothing like being home for the holidays and having a great meal. You do look forward to it, lol. I'm sure you did hurt your mother's feelings. As mothers we try to so hard to make times special, but I believe at moment she knew how special that meal was to you. Mine is the typical Thanksgiving disaster story. I was making my first dinner for the whole family. I really wanted to impress. Instead I cooked the bag of giblets in the bird. It would have been fine except it was a plastic bag that held all the giblets. It melted inside the bird, it stunk and tasted horrible.

Sorry, don't have any dinner disaster stories~ So, if I were to win, I'd get a bone-in Half Ham like we do most Christmases. We *love* Cook's Ham products.
ReplyDeleteSomeone gave me a turkey bag to bake the turkey and stuffing. There was no box and no directions, so I baked the turkey according to cookbook directions for roasting turkeys. When my son helped me remove the turkey from the bag to the platter, the turkey broke into thousands of pieces of bone and slop onto the platter. I've never used a turkey baking bag since.

Trying to impress a boyfriend, many years ago, I was cake and use wax paper to line the cake pans. The wax paper caught on fire in the oven and we had to use a fire extinquisher to put the cakes out. Not a good impression on my abilities to cook I guess.

Many years ago, the family gathered at my cousin's house for Christmas dinner. It was her first time being the main cook for the meal, and when the turkey was on the table we learned that she had not realized that the giblets were in a bag inside the bird. It wasn't really a disaster, since everything was really tasty, but she has never forgotten them since!

ReplyDeleteMy mashed potatoes were so runny - I was talking to people instead of paying attention to how much milk I was adding. I have one friend who insists on retelling the story of my mashed potato soup every holiday.
ReplyDeleteI make a less-than-traditional chicken parmesan using pre-cooked breaded chicken tenders. One time, I had my husband pick up the ingredients, and he picked up breaded tenders that weren't cooked. Since I just heat the tenders through, add warmed sauce, and then melt parmesan and mozzarella on top, the tenders were completely raw when I served them to my parents. Of course, we still talk about my serving them raw chicken during one of their first dinners at our house. Thanks for this giveaway!

ReplyDeleteI moved to VA and not long after I had a client give me a southern ham. Little did I know that they needed to be soaked in water for a day or two to remove the salt. As a result of not soaking it, the ham was so salty you could not eat it. Lesson learned:)

Not really a dinner disaster - but hopefully a dessert disaster is okay. I remember offering to bring dessert, and I decided I would bake my first apple pie. Oh I should really say that I tried to make an apple pie. It came out so bad that the crust wasn't edible. It literally needed an ice pick to break it apart. Everyone was so polite - they ate the inside like it was apple sauce.

ReplyDeleteApparently some types of potatoes aren't meant for mashing as I found out one Thanksgiving. I don't know what kind they were but when I tried to whip them, they just turned into a sticky, runny mass. Very unappetizing and you couldn't even make an impression in them to hold the gravy.

I had a friend that gave me a special meatloaf recipe since I'm not known for being a wonderful cook. So I chopped and diced and mixed and mashed and formed it into a loaf in the oven. I was getting everything ready to have Thanksgiving at my house. I turned the oven on to preheat it and heard a POP. I opened the door and discovered my heating element had broken in half! I had to take everything I was going to bake over to my Mom's and cook it there.

ReplyDeleteFrench Market Soup Recipe
2 c assorted dry beans (hint - pick ones the same size so they cook evenly!)
2 qt Water
1 Ham hock
1 1/4 tb Salt
1/4 tb Pepper
16 oz Can whole tomatoes;
-coarsely chopped,
- don't drain
1 1/2 c Chopped onion
1 Clove garlic; minced
1 Chili pepper; chopped
1/4 c Lemon juice
Sort and wash the beans. Place in a large heavy soup kettle.
Cover with water that reaches 2 inches above the beans.
Soak overnight.
The following morning: Drain the beans, and add 2 qt water, ham hock, salt and pepper.
Cover and bring to a boil.
Reduce the heat and simmer for 1 1/2 hours until beans are tender.
Add remaining ingredients.
Simmer for another 30 minutes, stirring occasionally.
Remove ham hock from the soup, take the meat from the bone, chop and return to the soup.
Makes 2 1/2 quarts
My first turkey I ever made for Thanksgiving I had the oven set so low that the turkey wasn't done on time for everyone and we had to eat something else. It was raw inside.

Our dinner disaster has repeated a few times, we forget something when we sit down to eat. Last Thanksgiving it was rolls, the year before it was potatoes.

When I was a teen I cooked a whole turkey without removing the insides which inculded a pplastic package of gravy!
