Dental Emergencies

With children, accidents happen. Do you know the proper steps to take in the event of an accident with your child's teeth? You should take your child to a hospital or dentist immediately if a tooth is knocked out or damaged.
Use the following steps to help save the lost or damaged tooth:
  • If the child is young and the teeth or tooth is loose, remove the tooth or teeth to prevent the child from chocking.
  • If a permanent tooth as been knocked out, it can often be saved if you take the following steps immediately:
  1. Find the tooth
  2. Handle the tooth by the part you normally see, not the root
  3. Gently rinse the tooth under water in a closed sink
  4. Do not scrub the tooth
  5. If possible, place the tooth in the opening it fall out of
  6. Hold the tooth in place while you're in route to the hospital or doctor
  7. If the tooth can't be placed back into the opening, place it under your tongue or in milk

If you take the above steps, the chances of saving your child's tooth or teeth will be great.

Green To Grow Baby Bottle Give Away

Green to Grow has become a front runner for it's BPA free baby bottles and nipples. As parents we want nothing but the best for our babies. Green to Grow is making 5 and 10-ounce dishwasher-safe baby bottles with beginner (0-3 months), intermediate (3-6 months), or expert (6+ months) nipples. You ask what is BPA? BPA is the abbreviation for Bisphenol A. Bisphenol A is a chemical thought to be hazardous to humans. In 2008, the media reported on the findings of the government when they questioned its safety. Retailers began removing BPA products from their shelves.

Green to Grow, which is owned by a Los Angeles-based husband and wife team, decided to make a commitment to produce BPA Free products for our children. They package their products in 100 percent recycled paper and donate 1 percent of its revenue to environmental causes. They also manage a "Bottle to Babies" program that distributes baby bottles to women's and homeless shelters. I love companies who donate back to the community, especially to women who are in need for their children.

I was thrilled when I was given the opportunity to review one of the Green To Grow bottles. I was sent the 10 oz. wide mouth bottle shown. It has an adorable little smiling fruit on the face of the bottle and comes with the nipple and cap. Green To Grow bottles have been featured Pregnancy & Newborn, Baby Couture, Today's Parent magazines as well as ABC and NBC news.

Green To Grow has a Welcome Home Set too. It includes everything new parents need to start nourishing a baby with confidence. The set includes: two 5 oz BPA-free baby bottles, two 10 oz BPA-free baby bottles (all of which come with Beginner nipples, 0 – 3 months); one package of Intermediate nipples (3 nipples per pack, 3 – 6 months); one package of Expert nipples (3 nipples per pack, 6+ months); and a super soft, organic cotton baby cloth, good for burps, slurps, baths, and splashes! This set will make a great baby shower or new baby gift.

You can win the Green To Grow wide neck bottle shown. Here's how: Visit Green To Grow and leave us a comment telling us what item you would purchase for your baby or a baby shower gift. Give Away will end August 20, 2009 at mid-night. Give Away is open to US Residents 18+ only.

Big Book for Dads Give Away

It's no secret that Dads are usually left out of celebrations such as baby showers or just the experience of having a new baby. Mom gets the attention initially and than baby. Dads linger in the background, waiting patiently to take on his new role. He endures mom's mid-night cravings and mood swings as she gains the attention of family, friends and strangers alike.

I remember my son-in-law enduring the attention that my daughter was getting when she was carrying my grandson. He was so loving and willing to take the back seat. He did ask for a stroller and car seat of his own when the baby was born. He didn't want to worry about taking the car seat of his truck once it was installed and he wanted to have his own stroller for leisurely walks in the morning or evenings. He is a great father and spends hours with his son playing, reading, giving him a bath, doing everything a father loves to do with his son. I am so blessed to have him as my son-in-law.

Giggles & Sugar Kisses came across this Little Big Book for Dads. It's published by Random House and filled with ideas that will keep father and son or father and daughter busy for hours. It includes activities for making sandcastles, flying kites, ideas for games, and making mac and cheese. It includes stories, Jack and the Bean Stalk, The Boy Who Cried Wolf among others. It is beautifully illustrated and contains a hard back cover. This book retails for $24.95 and is worth every penny. It's perfect for the new dad. It will make a great baby shower or new baby gift.

You can be the winner of this book compliments of Random House. Here's how: visit the children's section at Random House and let us know what book besides the give away you would like to have. Leave us a comment and let us know what you found.

Quotable Sunday

It's Quotable Sunday thanks to Toni at A Daily Dose of Toni. I love Quotable Sunday, it's the day that we share a few of our favorite quotes. I decided to share a few grandparent quotes this week. Being a grandmother has become one of my greatest roles in life. I had no idea that I could love anyone as deeply as I love my grandson. He is the joy of my life.

Here's a few quotes that express how I felt about my grandparents, and a few quotes to express how I feel about my grandson:

If nothing is going well, call your grandmother - Italian Proverb

Grandmas are moms with lots of frosting - Anoynymous
Nobody can do for little children what grandparents do. Grandparents sort of sprinkle stardust over the lives of little children. - Alex Haley

Perfect loves does not come until the first grandchild. - Welsh Proverb

There's no place like home except Grandmas. - Author Unknown

What a bargain grandchildren are. I give them my loose change, and they give me a million dollars worth of joy. - Gene Perret

When a child is born so are grandmothers. - Judith Levy

When grandparents enter the door, discipline flies out the window. - Ogden Nash

Grandmas never run out of hugs or cookies. - Author Unknown

I hope that you have enjoyed my quotes today. Please leave us comment on your favorite quote. If you would like to join us, drop by A Daily Dose of Toni and leave your link. We'll visit and read your favorite quotes.

Should We Take His Nip Nip?

As you can see my little sweetie is a character. Don't you love his hat? He also has another attachment, his pacifier. He's almost 2 and my daughter thinks he's getting too old to have it. Pediatricians recommend that toddlers be weaned from their pacifiers by 2. She and my son-in-law want to put him in nursery school for a few hours a day so he can play with other children, and they believe he should be off the pacifier. How old should a child be when you take their nip nip? He absolutely loves it. Gran thinks she should leave him alone and let him give it up when he's ready. I don't expect him to be walking around with his nip nip when he's 3, now it soothes him.

He was a thumb sucker when he was born, and I'm concerned that he will revert although research has shown that most toddlers don't revert when they're weaned. There are also other concerns, interference with speech, dental problems and ear infections. I've seen no signs of either. I think he will gradually give it up when he learns to sooth himself. I must admit he hangs on to it tightly. If you try to take it, he'll fight you for it. I meant that literally, lol. If we have a discussion about it, he knows. He will run to it, pick it up and suck on it for dear life. He's such a sweetie and oh so adorable. Gran just can't stand to see or hear him in distress.

How old was your child when you weaned them? I would love to hear your story, please leave a comment.

Keebler Bug Bites

When my grandson visits I make sure I have his favorite snacks, one of which is the Pepperidge Farm Gold Fish. While in search of the gold fish, I came across these cinnamon graham crackers in the shape of butterflies, dragonflies, and lady bugs among others made by Keebler. Their new on the market, so I thought I test them with my grandson.

He fell in love with these little bugs. He walks around the house saying, "Eat a bug. Eat a bug." It's so adorable. These little cookies make great snacks with a cup of milk. They're excellent soothers for boo boos too.

Your children will giggle while they gobble them up. Oh adults love them too, at least I do and they make a great conversation piece with us big kids. Some kids never grow up!

Annuals or Perennials?

Each year I plant petunias on my deck. I went on vacation and when I returned I found this planter in full bloom. When I first noticed it, my response was WTH? Who planted these flowers? I knew I hadn't planted them. I had decided to powerwash and stain the deck before planting any perennials this year and those two tasks had not been completed.

I noticed the colors were in tune with my theme from last year. I thought for a brief moment my significant other had planted them while was I gone, but this planter was the only one that contained blooms. So, that idea didn't last long.

I concluded they were the annuals that I planted from last year. Needless to say I was shocked, I didn't know that petunias rebloomed from one year to the next. Here they are and as beautiful as they were last year. Never underestimate the power of mother nature and our Heavenly Father.

Have you had a strange experience with your flowers or trees? We would love to hear about it, please leave us a comment.

Gangsta Baby

Have You Seen A More Pathetic Mother?

I have often wondered how a mother can just walk away from her children. I know there are times when a mother simply can't care for them and they are better off with someone who can, but Debbie Rowe is one of the most pathetic excuses for a mother that I have witnessed in my lifetime.

Who bargains for their children? What type of woman accepts money to stay out of their children's life and when they see an opportunity to fill their pockets with money again they resurface? Being a mother has been one if not the greatest achievement in my life. I would literally kill for my daughter and now my daughter and grandson. I can't imagine giving birth and just handing my child over to her father and saying she's yours. I also can't imagine him handing me millions of dollars and telling me bye-bye, don't come back and I agree. If you're going to serve as a surrogate, play your role and move on.

When I see this woman flash across the TV screen, I just shake my head. The last time I saw her she was screaming and using profanity on national television because a paparazzi touched her. My first thought was, wow this is a woman who's going to court to fight for custody of Michael Jackson's children. She really knows how to carry herself in public, she has a lot of class. What happened to excuse me, but I would appreciate it if you would not touch me. I can only imagine what she would teach those poor children if she's granted custody. How to kick someone's butt?

The children have obviously been well taken care of. Besides being adorable, they are highly educated and well-rounded. It has been reported that they speak 4 languages. Most people struggle with English. So whether it was Michael Jackson or the nanny who guided them, they've done a great job with the children. I hope that they will continue to be nurtured and lead in the right direction, I just hope it's not that trashy looking poor excuse for a mother leading them.

It's doubtful that she will be granted custody, I truly don't believe she wants them she just looking for a payday once again. How do you go through $8.5 million dollars and a mansion to a rancher on a horse farm. No concept of motherhood and no concept of money.

I pray for the children, and I hope they end up in a comfort home with people who love them and people who will help them perserve loving memories of their father.

What's your thoughts? We would love to hear from you.

Quotable Sunday

Today is Quotable Sunday thanks to Toni at A Daily Dose of Toni. Each Sunday, we share a few of our favorite quotes. This week, I decided to focus on perseverance. I need to lose 20 pounds. I decided to take baby steps and focus on my goal 10 pounds at time. My goal is to lose 10 pounds within the next 8 weeks and I must embrace perseverance to be successful. My weight has been a struggle for me over the years, I can't manage to get it off I love food, but I hate to exercise. My health has become a factor now, I'm borderline diabetic so it's imperative that I start exercising regularly and get off the excess weight.

I'm scared to death of needles so that's another incentive for me to work hard. I can't imagine giving myself insulin shots.

Here are a few quotes for those of us who need to perserve with some endeavor:

"Consider the postage stamp; its usefulness consists in the ability to stick to one thing until it gets there." Josh Billings

"I do not think there is any other quality so essential to success of any kind as the quality of perseverance. It overcomes almost everything, even nature." John D. Rockefeller

"Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts." Winston Churchill

"Success seems to be connected with action. Successful men keep moving. They make mistakes, but they don't quit." Conrad Hilton

"In order to get from what was to what will be, you must go through what is." Anonymous

"Never give up. Never, never give up! We shall go on to the end." Winston Churchill

My favorite quote is the first one by Josh Billings. Leave us a comment and let us know your favorite quote this week. If you would like to join us and share your quotes, visit A Daily Dose of Toni and leave the link to your blog.

This Red Dress Was Designed for Skinny Bitches

Check out the new dress that Delta Airline flight attendants will be wearing. Nice! My significant other is a pilot, I'm glad he doesn't work for Delta Airlines, lol. The dress is attractive and it will definitely catch the attention of everyone in the airport, but some of the flight attendants have filed a grievance. Not because it's sexy or it's red, because the dress only goes up to a size 18. What about the plus size attendants? Why is this beautiful uniform made for the skinny bitches only and the larger women are being told to wear pieces including slacks, tops and blue dresses that are currently made in larger sizes. Big woman want to look sexy too.
The dress is not your typical flight uniform, it carries a designer label. The designer decided to not make the uniform in a size larger than 18. Delta and Northwest airlines have merged. Delta was basically non-union; however, Northwest was heavily unionized. As a result, the flight attendants decided to file a grievance. I had several questions when I read the article:
  • Why would an airline purchase a uniform that could not be worn by all of their attendants?
  • Because the dress size stopped at a size 18, didn't they know that they could possibly face a discrimination suit?
  • Discrimination causes a hostile work environment. I certainly do not want to be on a flight where a hostile work environment has been created because one attendant is wearing the sexy red uniform and stilettos and another is wearing the mundane blue uniform.
Do you think the dress should be made to fit all attendants? Normally, the flight attendants uniforms go up to a size 28. Not making the uniform in a size larger than 18 leaves quite a few women out of the new uniform.
Let us know your thoughts and if you think Delta is discriminating against plus size women.

Evian Babies Rock

This video has received over 4 million hits on Youtube, so I had to check it out. It's adorable and a great ad for Evian water. It hasn't been released in the US yet. Evian wanted to check out the reaction before they released it. With over 4 million hits, I would say it's a success. Hope you enjoy it.

Dads Are Winning Custody of their Children

Are you going through a custody battle for your children? Statistics show that fathers who actively seek custody of their children obtain primary or joint physical custody 70 percent of the time. More and more men are becoming the primary care giver of their children.

How and why are men achieving this position? Data shows several reasons:
  • They are becoming more involved in their children's upbringing. They are changing diapers, giving baths, reading books, and fixing meals. Mr. Mom has become a reality.

  • They are educating themselves on how to win. They are no longer spending time convincing the judge that the mother is unfit. They are spending their time convincing the judge that they are just as fit as the mother.

  • Women are emotional. Men are proving they are more stable emotionally and they are using intelligence to win.

  • More men are willing to spend the money on attorney fees preparing for the fight. They are taking the time to seek the best representation in court.

  • Not only are they willing to pay the attorney's fees, they are seeking child support from the mother in certain cases. If they receive joint custody, they are asking that the amount of child support be lowered or they not have to pay support since they are responsible for buying diapers, milk, cloths etc. when they have custody.

  • Men are forming support groups and learning from other fathers who have won custody.

  • Men are proving they can provide a more stable environment because they have a bigger pay day. They are willing to give up the two seater vehicle and bachelor pad. They are buying homes with backyards and SUVs to ensure they have room for the children and excursions.

The days of having to prove the mother unfit are over ladies. I know, I watched my brother win custody of his two sons. I have not only watched my brother win custody of his sons, his son just won joint custody of his little boy (shown). He gets him weekly and pays no child support. He's responsible for his expenses when this little sweetie is in his custody.

Initially he was ordered to pay child support and had the usual court order, visitation rights every other week-end and holidays. He obtained a new attorney and won joint custody and no child support the second round. What was different the second time? His attorney focused on the fact that he had a better job and medical benefits. He owned a home and the baby's grandparents, my brother and his wife, were within a mile to assist him with the baby's care. They were available to provide child care and there was no better environment for the baby than his grandparents when he was working. What's amazing is they obtained the same lawyer the second time that helped my brother win custody of his two sons 20 years ago. The change occurred within a 3 month timeframe.

My nephew was at a BQ this past week-end with his son, which generated alot of conversation. I listened to an exchange with my son-in-law who's 30 and a 59 year old man while we were there. My son-in-law told the man that he was an irresponsible father because he wasn't involved in his daughter's life when she was growing up. She's now 30, and it's impossible for him to relive those years. My son-in-law told him that he "needed to man up and admit he was wrong for not being there. He also told the man that if he and his wife (my daughter) went separate ways, he would fight for joint custody. There would be nothing that would stop him from being involved in his son's life."

I've watched my son-in-law with my grandson, and there is no doubt in my mind that he would not fight for joint custody of his son or total custody if he thought it was necessary. The thinking of young men these days is quite different from my generation. Most men in my generation did not seek custody, they were happy paying child support and having their freedom if there was a divorce.

I'm proud of my nephew for seeking joint custody of his son. He is an involved father who loves him dearly. If it's impossible to keep your marriage together, gear up for the fight ladies. Men are preparing to do battle for their most treasured possession.

Back In the Day

What has happened to the TV commericals? Many of them today make absolutely no sense. I grow up with fun commericals in the 60's, 70's and 80's. I'm telling my age I know, but the commericals today have lost their appeal. Campbell Soup, Fritos, Dippity Do and cereal commericals were fun and entertaining back in the day. Saturday mornings cartoons were a blast. I've thought back to my childhood over the past few weeks. I remembered the smell of a great breakfast cooking and the TV blaring with commericals that would make us laugh and sing and the best cartoons.
I found a few of my favorite commericals on Youtube. One of my favorites was the Frito Bandito commerical. I loved this little guy. He sang a song about Fritos, which is one of my favorite snacks to this day. Check him out:

Ayiee, yie-yie-yieeee,
I am dee Frito Bandito.
I love Frito's Corn Chips,
I love dem I do.
I love Frito's Corn Chips,
I take dem from you.

The Frito Bandito was banned in the 70's. The Latino population saw him as sterotype. I respect all cultures and what they perceive to be sterotypes, but as a child I wasn't aware of sterotypes. To me he was just funny. I loved him.

Another favorite was the Chiquita Banana commericals. My favorite banana commerical was made before my time in 1944. I discovered the commerical years ago, and it remains a favorite. I just love to watch the banana dance. Miss Chiquita started as a dancing banana, but she's now featured as the lady shown to the left. I think if we had more commericals like these, we could probably get our kids to eat healthier. My 2 year old grandson loves this video:

Another favorite was the Trix Rabbit. The Trix Rabbit would try to con children into giving him a bowl of Trix cereal. The children in the commerical would respond, "Silly Rabbit Trix Are For Kids". We would run around all day, repeating this slogan. It drove my mother crazy.
I could go on and on about the 60, 70 and 80's. Not only did they have great commericals, the Saturday morning cartoons were the bomb. We watched The Archies singing Sugar Sugar, Josie and the Pussycats, and the Jackson 5. Oh, how I loved Saturday mornings. My mother always cooked a big breakfast. She made biscuits, pancakes or waffles from scratch. Our eggs were retrieved from my grandparents hen house, so they were always fresh and yummy. Grandma and Granddaddy also had blackberries, strawberries, and raspberries. Mom would spend hours making jams and storing it so we could pile it on our pancakes, biscuits, and waffles on the week-ends. Every Saturday my father would say to my mother, "Look at those kids with all that jam". She ignored him, and we would just laugh and make our piles of jam higher. He would wait for us to add more jam, somehow he know that we would add more as a result of what he said, and than he would go to somebody's plate and scoop off enough jam to cover his own pancakes or biscuits.

Another great memory was the hours we spent gathering walnuts and later cracking them with a brick so Mom could put them in our brownies You had to be creative back in the day, I didn't discover nutcrackers until much later in life.

Thanks for allowing me to share a few childhood memories with you. We would love to hear how you spent your Saturdays while growing up.
